The small rural community of Uarbry in the NSW Central West has been all but wiped out after a massive out of control bushfire tore through yesterday. An emergency evacuation warning was activated yesterday for villages in the path of the St Ivan fire which breached containment lines at Leadville near Dunedoo. Residents have told the ABC that nearly the entire village has been lost. Blazes tear across Eastern states while WA mops up. Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said 25 fires were still uncontained on Monday morning, after blazes burnt across “a very large area” consuming everything in their path. Losses in homes, losses in buildings, losses in livestock and other agricultural assets,” he told the Nine Network. What they saved yesterday will far outweigh the losses that we report today. The Sir Ivan fire, near Dunedoo, has burned through almost 50, hectares with an active fire edge of about km, Mr Fitzsimmons said. There are reports the nearby village of Uarby has suffered significant damage with reports of at least six houses being destroyed by fire. The Kains Flat fire northeast of Mudgee has burnt through hectares.

Download this mp3 file If you had told me a few years ago, that you could regularly catch Bream and whiting on the surface, like bass or trout, I would’ve said, “you’re dreamin’! When they start hitting the poppers, it’s some of the most addictive fishing you can do. Throw in the odd flathead, longtom, tailor and trevally and it’s great, visual, fun. I favour the walk the dog type lures, over the cup faced poppers, but both styles work well. I pulled a couple of big blue lip bream and a number of nice whiting up to 38cm out of water as shallow as ankle deep this week.

It’s great when they hook up and take off across the flats with a rooster tail of water in their wake, like mini bonefish. At the moment, in my local estuary, the massive cicada hatch this year, has the big bream patrolling the wind blown forested edges, looking up for a feed. They are taking little surface lures and flies just like bass! Flocks of hungry seagulls are also feeding on them, and show you the hot spots.

We kick out with some great tips on popper fishing with Rob Paxevanos, and Rob also takes us to this week’s ‘hot spot’, Tumut.

There are a couple of decent if not small slopes at Swansea heads and the park, which i think is what you are talking about “north of caves”, but to be honest, retrieval would be more of a hassle than wybung. I learnt to fly around those cliffs, and I also learned to climb some pretty hairy cliff faces too! The thing that can be misleading when you look at the hills around here is the thickness of the bushes.

They look ok from a distance, but start walking into them and it becomes incredibly dense and they sometimes grow over the cliff, so it’s very hard to tell where it actually drops off sometimes! The type of slope you need is dependant on the type of plane you have of course, and the actual lift on the day is also another big variable between hills, even the same hill in different winds. Meaning fairly low angle hills can be perfect in light winds but blow out after a certain speed.

Vertical cliffs always work with any direct wind of course though, but retrieval can be a pain of course. Note I said lift and not wind. Jan 27, ,
