Lets take a look and see if this budget-friendly pen holds up to its family name. Right out of the box, the Victory has the look and feel of a luxury item. The pen is shipped securely in a soft lined and cushioned box, with two standard international short cartridges hidden underneath the platform, and a converter installed in the body. Like other standard converters, this one lacks any sort of branding or unique features, which means replacing it will be very simple should the need ever arise.
The lacquered finish and polished chrome accents combined with the subtle engraved branding give this pen a very nice first impression. While I typically prefer to leave my pen cap on the table, the length of the uncapped Victory very nearly requires posting.
Pen nibs snag easily on fibrous or textured paper. Lately, recycled papers, like craft and handmade, have become extremely popular, and while they certainly look cool, their textures make them a nightmare of pen snags, ink splatters, and broken nibs.
Onoto K3 Fountain Pen C. By the famed Strathendry based Onoto pen manufacturer was in trouble. The Biro was impacting trade and Onoto needed to produce a new range of fountain pens to compete, thus the k series pens were born. There were 4 variants, K1, K2, K3 and K4. K1, K2 and K4 pens had hooded nibs, whilst the K3 pens had lovely open nibs. All of the K series pens used a piston up-filler system in which the interior of the barrel formed the reservoir.
In this system the end of the barrel unscrews, forcing the internal plunger down, and when the end is screwed closed the internal plunger moves up within the barrel drawing ink into the reservoir. The last K series Onoto pens were made early in just before the Strathendry factory closed at the end of February. The pen we have for sale is a turquoise example of the open nib K3 with gold plated fittings. The pen is fitted with the original excellent size 3 Fine 14kt Onoto nib.
The nib has no visible flaws and writes smoothly. The pen is mm long. Both are small, easily missed and do not show up in the photographs.

Metal nib was made of copper and bronze while today it is made of steel. It has a slit that leads the ink from a vent hole to the paper and works by a combination of gravity and capillary action. Handle can be made of plastic, metal, glass and even bone. Dip pen is used for writing and drawing and it does not have its own reservoir for ink. Dip pen is dipped in an ink bottle or inkwell action from which it got the name so it could be used.
Some people, on the other hand, fill the dip pen with eyedropper or a syringe.

Metal nibs have their origins as far back as ancient Egypt and were made of metals like copper and bronze. However, the quality of writing that could be achieved with these pens was inferior to that of reed pens. Like most fountain pen collectors in the s and s, I considered Esterbrook pens to be one step above junk. Sure they were well-made, functional and versatile, tough and durable . But they had steel nibs during a time when only pens with 14K nibs were considered collectable. My previous post was about the Parker 45 Signet. Twenty-five years before the debut of the Parker 45, Esterbrook introduced the screw-in nib for their fountain pens.
What makes Esterbrook pens unique among those pens featuring easily interchangeable nibs, is the vast variety of nib choices available. Do you think they write better than your regular Visconti?
Brand Seriously, brand does not matter for the most part. In fact, one of my local pen stores has a huge bucket filled with broken Mont Blanc pen parts that came off pens that were simply unsalvageable. Vintage vs New The best thing about buying an old fountain pen and having it restored is that you know for certain that the pen has lasted 50 or more years, and will continue to last after being serviced.
